If you just got a 4WD offroading toy or ATV and want to find a place to take it, or you just moved into a new neighborhood and want to find a place to take your jeep or sand rail, you've come to the right place!
You might start by going through this list of 4x4 trails and maps and check out Where to Ride ATVs and Go Offroading. You can search for trails in your area. You can also find ways to be good stewards of our environment while still enjoying offroading.
Join an ATV, Offroading or 4x4 Club
You can also join a local 4x4 club to connect with like minded people and quickly find other people to go with.
Most active clubs have meetings, schedule group rides, and even sponsor and produce various events like fund raisers, trail maintenance projects, trash cleanups etc. Some clubs even forge relationships with other clubs or organizations to help promote their goals and beliefs.
The Bookstore
If there's a bookstore nearby you can probably find a wide variety of literature on local areas that are open to OHVs. Libraries are also a good place to look.
Your Local Phone Book!
You can even look in your local phone book. The Government pages will have public lands or agencies that manage public land, like the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Department of Interior (DoI). Federal land is in the "United States Government" pages, state parks, forests and recreation areas are usually in the "State Government" pages under "Department of Envoronment and Conservation" or "Department of Environment and Protection".
In the unlikely event there is an OHV area in the city you can look in the "City Government" pages.
Other Ways to Find Places to Ride ATVs and 4WDs
You can also take the old-fashioned approach and simply drive around looking for tell-tail signs of (legal) offroading activity. Maybe even keep an eye out when you're getting gas or passing by neighbors who have OHVs in tow or in the yard and simply ask them where the good spots to ride are.
There are bound to be dealer and parts stores around. They often serve the offroad community with accessories or repairs and may have information on where to go offroading.
If you're unsure if a place that's been recommended is legal to ride you should contact the local authorities and ask before hitting the trail, just in case.
