Arizona 4-Wheeling Trails and Maps - Where to Drive 4x4 Trucks, 4WD SUVs OffRoad

By , About.com Guide

Arizona is a great state for ATVs and Offroading. There are expansive deserts and mountains where you can take your 4x4 truck or 4WD SUV offroading. Arizona also has considerably less anti-OHV legislation than many other states.

There is a real good variety of trails to take depending on your style of offroading and every type of wheeling for beginners and experts. If you like easy, flat sandy rides you might consider Ajax Trail just north of Florence or the Butterfield Stage Route south of Phoenix between Maricopa and Gila Bend.

If you're looking for something a bit more challenging you might want to head out to Table Mesa and take a shot at Anaconda Trail if you're up for a no-turning-back climb. If you want to bring a sack lunch and all your friends you can try Charouleau Gap, AZ north of Tucson. Be ready for a long day.

If you've been around the mountain a few times and want a medium difficulty ride you can hit El Oso Mine near Four Peak, south of Highway 87. Some good clearance and 4wheeldrive and you'll be in for a good day. Flagstaff-Grand Canyon Stage Route is near Flagstaff. It is a 12 mile ride that can be enjoyed in Jeeps, ATVs and motorcycles.

Florence Junction Area offers a multitude of trails in varying degrees of difficulty. Martinez Canyon is located in the desolate Florence Junction area which is just east of Phoenix and the Valley of the Sun.Martinez Canyon is near Florence Junction. It is a beautiful canyon of medium difficulty about 3 miles long.

The deserts can be very unfriendly so it is best to have a plan and a good tool kit before you head out. Grap a map or log on to your favorite search engine's map section and decide where you're going to go. Once you've decided where and when, be sure to let someone know, and let them know when you expect to return.

Arizona is a big desert. If you're out there alone and break down or get injured it could end up being a long day. Never go alone. It is also a good idea to know at least a little basic auto repair. Just in case.
