Product Summary
Garmin III Plus

Guide Rating -
Pros  •  12 channel parallel receiver system
•  Ability to customize screens to view specific data
•  Excellent reception using the supplied (detachable) antenna -- even in wooded areas and canyons

•  Detailed, elaborate functions and informative data displays
•  User friendly with a manual that's clear and easy to understand
•  Comes with excellent built-in maps and a large database of cities and towns
•  PC interface cable included
Cons  •  Lack of memory for downloading additional maps (internal memory storage only 1.4MB)
•  No address look-up feature
•  No automatic shutoff in case you forget to turn off the unit
•  Somewhat heavier and bulkier than most handhelds; doesn't fit well on a belt; best for vehicular use
The Bottom Line - The Garmin III Plus is a top-of-the line GPS receiver that has excellent mapping capabilities, although it's short on memory for storing additional downloaded maps. While portable, it's better suited to drivers than hikers.
