Summary - Toyota 4Runner

Thumbs up

  • Class-leading engineering.
  • Superb all-round performance both on and off-road.

Thumbs down

  • Expect sticker shock.
  • Basic design is unexciting.

Bottom line

  • You can never, ever go wrong betting on Toyota quality, reliability and re-sale value.

Competition

  • Nissan Murano:
    • Exciting and very original new design
    • Don't take it off-road.
    • Much cheaper
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee:
    • The grand-daddy of them all.
    • Getting awfully long in the tooth.
    • Loaded-up, it can be pricey too.
  • GM Envoy:
    • Big, luxurious and linebacker-quick
    • Needs to lose about three-quarters if a ton to play in this league
    • Quintessentially North American SUV, great friend to the oil companies
