While a series hybrid engine will provide a cleaner more fuel-efficient engine, it has inherent problems for offroaders and SUV enthusiasts. Series HEVs run on the electric motor (and the electric motor ONLY), the ICE will begin to run only when the battery levels drop below a certain level. Highway driving and uphill performance can be greatly affected by this reduced battery power.
Parallel HEVs utilize both the ICE and electric motor according to the conditions needed. In other words, if you're headed up hill, the ICE will assist or take over if needed.
HEVs Bring Acceptance from Anti- SUV and Environmentalists
One of every two vehicles sold in America today is classified as an SUV. The consumer hunger for these bigger and roomier vehicles continues to grow, as does resistance from environmentalists and anti-SUV enthusiasts. Soon these polar opposites may find common ground.
Some experts feel that an SUV will be a better vehicle to convert to an HEV than the typical automobile. One reason is the ability of an SUV to carry a larger fuel cell (battery). The hybrid electric SUV should lessen the pressures and concerns from all concerned parties.
Will HEVs be Accepted by Offroaders?
The closest thing to "offroad" that the average SUV owner experiences is the speed bump at the local grocery store or the semi-annual trip to the state park. Most SUV owners are concerned with the fragile balance between hauling the family tree and keeping the fuel budget just under the national deficit. The fuel efficiency of the HEV wins that market hands down.
Offroaders, however, will be a tougher sell. Just how well will the HEV perform in the tougher conditions of an offroad environment? An HEV Hummer developed and tested by UQM Technologies and PEI Electronics has actually outperformed the military version of the vehicle in fuel efficiency. It also boasts twice the acceleration and climbing capability of a conventionally powered "Hummer." The Jeep Commander may face tougher acceptance as a pure EV (electric vehicle).
Will an HEV be accepted by everyone?... Only time will tell.
