Recently overheard in the 4wheeldrive forum:

Drivers have been sharing offroad war stories of their own in the 4wheeldrive forum. Check them out. If you're like me, you'll be grinning from ear to ear as you realize how many times you've done (or seen someone do) crazy things like this!

Can your story top these?...
  • How about a guy who just bought his 1st 4x4... a '79 F150 with a classic interior that was decorated 60s style (you know, puffy black diamond pattern vinyl sides and ceiling). He and his friend go 4-wheeling for the first time in this truck, and he's counting on his friend (an "experienced" 4-wheeler) to instruct him on the proper way to use his truck. Only, he wasn't willing to listen to anything his friend had to say, resulting in one of the most disastrous mudding experiences in offroad history.

"...I tell him, you know, ease down into it at an angle, then give her some gas. What does the lad do? Hammers it from 20 feet away. Truck launches off the close bank, slams into the far bank bumper-first, the bumper digs into the bank, and the front of the truck sinks into the mud. We got people flying around, cussing and hollering..."

  • Then there's the deer hunter who took his Scout onto a road that's down from a high ridge and has switchbacks so tight one has to backup a couple of times to make the turns. It's a tricky ride, but it's also a shortcut that can save a lot of time. Unfortunately, recent heavy rains wreaked havoc on this trip, ultimately swallowing up his vehicle!

"...He eventually had to replace the gas tank ,fuel lines & carb but he never learned anything from that experience & at 45 he still does stupid things..."

  • What about the 4 women who were sent on a job to drive a proposed pipeline route... Only the "powers that be" wouldn't allow them to take the company 4wd vehicle, so they had to take the plush 2-day old company car instead. While surveying the site, they get stuck out in some vast wasteland, and not even a nearby 4wd truck is able to pull them out. They call AAA and are told they'll send a tow truck for semis. Next came the dueling banjos, and the rest is history...

"...He (the AAA driver) gets out and smiles at us, with his single tooth. He said something about how did a bunch of gals like you get all the way out here? At that point I was hearing Dueling Banjos...."

  • Check out the story of one adventurous female who was destined to own a 4wd after several sticky situations where she ended up in the mud. And the funniest part came when the VIN number of her new Ford Explorer included the word "mud" in it. Now, so does her license plate!
