Definition: The combination of a battery-powered electric motor and a gasoline engine in a car, pickup truck or SUV.
Common Misspellings: highbred power or hybred power
Examples: The electric motor runs off the battery and handles the normal stop-and-go travel and initial highway acceleration, while the gasoline- or diesel-powered internal combustion engine takes over when the vehicle reaches higher speeds. The battery that generates the electric motor is recharged during the times that the vehicle is coasting and braking. At highway speeds the gasoline engine also recharges the battery, so the vehicle never needs to be plugged into an outside charging device.
