Ford F-Series Trucks and Excursion SUVs

INDIANAPOLIS(Aug. 2002) -
International Truck and Engine Corporation joins Ford Motor Companyto announce the new Power Stroke® Diesel V-8 engine with best-in-class 325 horsepower and 560 foot-pounds of torque - an increase of 10 foot-pounds since its pre-introduction in May. New for the mid-2003 model year Ford F-Series Super Duty pickups and Excursion, the direct-injected Power Stroke Diesel powertrain combines the enhanced 6.0-liter engine with a five-speed automatic Torqshift® transmission for increased power, fuel economy and a smoother ride.

The concept Power Stroke Diesel V-8, featuring advanced fuel injection technology for proved fuel economy, cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) for cleaner emissions and the EVRTTM electronic turbocharger for improved towing and hauling, as first shown with the Mighty F-350 Tonka concept truck unveiled at the 2002 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. International, designer and manufacturer of the Power Stroke Diesel exclusively for Ford, announced the new powertrain in conjunction with the fourth annual Power Stroke Diesel 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and rally to show its appreciation for the loyalty of Power Stroke Diesel owners. Hundreds of drivers attended the daylong event.

"The Power Stroke Diesel engine has set the standard for diesel pickups and vans in commercial markets. Owners want vehicles capable of performing more work - but they don't want to sacrifice fuel economy," said Dick Fotsch, president, Engine Group, International Truck and Engine Corporation."Personal use owners appreciate the power, performance and driving experience the Power Stroke Diesel provides. Ownership for these customers supports an active lifestyle including camping and towing boats, horse trailers, race cars or RVs."

"With the new Power Stroke Diesel, customers will benefit from the best-in-class towing capability, improved ability to take on steep grades, and new fuel and air technologies that make this engine even more fun and economical to drive," added Fotsch.

The new Power Stroke Diesel V-8 offers several improvements, including:

Improved Drivability

  • Best-in-class towing with 560 foot-pounds of torque, 40 percent gradeability improvement and grade braking. The new TorqShift automatic transmission features a Tow-Haul mode, that once activated, increases a driver's feeling of control when towing large loads up and down steep grades and automatically controls shifts and maximizes available torque. Upon descent, the tow-haul mode utilizes engine braking to extend brake-life and improve driver control.
  • The new Power Stroke Diesel performs 20 percent better at high speed (0-60 mph), and 15 percent better at low speed (5-20 mph) than its predecessor.
  • Refined noise and vibration characteristics due to a stamped-damped steel oil pan and pilot injection offer a smoother and more pleasant ride.
  • The new EVRTTM electronically controlled turbocharger provides efficient performance over the entire operating range, reduced turbocharger lag, aggressive low-end torque and improved operation at high altitudes. The EVRT turbo employs a set of vanes that automatically adjust to optimize the airflow within the turbo, so it acts like a small turbo for instant response at low speeds, and works like a large turbo when more airflow is needed at full power.
Improved Cost of Ownership
  • Drivers may achieve an added 10 percent fuel economy savings over the original Power Stroke Diesel, due in part to hydraulic rail fuel injection. With hydraulic rail fuel injection, fuel injectors are actuated by a high-pressure hydraulic rail system that generates injection pressures up to 26,000 psi. Along with four valves per cylinder, this increases performance and fuel economy while lowering emissions, due to more complete mixing of fuel and air for better combustion.
  • Engineered for improved serviceability, the oil filter is located on top of the engine. An innovatively designed oil cartridge, similar in concept to a printer cartridge, keeps oil self-contained during a filter change and the engine free of dripping oil during routine maintenance.
  • The engine is built solid with cast iron block with bedplate and cast iron cylinder heads for increased durability.
  • A redesigned high mileage water pump with no hose connections is patterned after the best-in-class design to reduce leaks
  • External access to the glow plugs aids cold weather maintenance.
  • The Power Stroke Diesel is designed to last for 250,000 miles, more than twice the life expectancy of comparable gas engines. That translates to great resale value for Ford F-Series Super Duty owners.
