Automobilemag (2003)
The V-6 all-wheel-drive Escape has been highly praised, and rightly so. The four-cylinder, front-wheel-drive version just doesn't cut it, especially compared with the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V.

Car Buying Strategies (2003)
The Ford Escape is a small, rugged SUV that provides an adventurous, responsive ride, sharp handling and a stylish interior package. In addition, excellent fuel economy and low emissions combine to make this four-door, five-passenger sport-utility vehicle practical and environmentally responsible.

A very capable small SUV thanks to its powerful V6 engine, spacious cabin, handsome looks and car-like handling.

Epinions (2003)
See what fellow owners of the 2003 Ford Escape SUV think of their vehicles -- the good and the bad.

New Car Test Drive (2003)
The Ford Escape is one of the best of the small, affordable SUVs, assuming that off-road travel isn't a priority. The Escape offers agile handling on paved and unpaved roads.

Edmunds (2002)
Lacks the off-road capability of a truck-based SUV, barely adequate base engine, shoddy build quality, unrefined interior materials.

Ford's Escape and Mazda's mechanically similar Tribute are not too big; similar in size to mini-utes like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution (2001)
With unibody construction and go-anywhere four-wheel drive capabilities, the new Ford Escape provides refined ride and handling, best-in-class interior spaciousness, good fuel economy and low emissions in a small, tough SUV.

Automobile Reviews (2001)
The Escape is comparable in size to the Honda CRV and will give it some good competition. The smaller SUV market is beginning to take off because these vehicles are rugged and sporty but still offer a refined ride.

Boston Globe (2001)
Ford built a new SUV from the ground up. Did not base it on a car platform, as others have done. Did not slap it on a heavy truck platform that would deny the final product the car-like feel that many folks are demanding in their SUVs these days. Instead, they designed a whole new platform (shared with the Mazda Tribute) that incorporates Ford's first ever unibody truck platform.

Canadian Driver (2001)
The automatic transmission is offered only with the V6 engine - consumers who want the base four cylinder, front-wheel-drive model with an automatic transmission are out of luck.

Car Buying Strategies (2001)
The exciting new 2001 Ford Escape Sport Utility is offered in four rugged models, Escape XLS, Escape SLT, Escape XLS 4WD, and the XLT 4WD.
