Unlike truck tops, bed covers do not create additional vertical cargo space. Bed covers are best for those who want the benefits of the truck top but prefer a low-profile solution and/or an easy on, easy off type of cover. Truck bed covers also reduce wind drag at the tailgate, thereby increasing overall fuel economy.
- They provide a strong, rigid canopy cover over your pickup bed.
- Most will work with under-the-rail and over-the-rail bed liners.
- Most do not restrict the tailgate in any way, allowing you to open your tailgate with out taking the cover off.
- With most models, installation requires no drilling into the truck bed.
When purchasing a truck bed cover, you need to decide between a hard cover (solid fiberglass) or a soft cover (vinyl). The differences between the two are highlighted below:
Hard Covers:
- Won't blow off even at highway speeds
- Available with hinge systems so you can easily lift the cover to add/remove cargo
- Provide better security, as it is lockable
- Can weigh upwards of 100 lbs.
- More costly than vinyl
- More durable and structurally stronger
- Completely weatherproof
- Can be painted to match the vehicle
- Some can be tricky to remove and reinstall on a frequent basis
- Most don't allow for the bed to be opened entirely for large or tall loads
Soft Covers:
- Are very easy to remove and reinstall on a frequent basis.
- Provide a less rigid top than hard covers (though some are sturdy enough for 1-2 people to stand on top and can support 12 inches of wet snow with ease).
- Can be easily removed for hauling tall cargo.
- Some come with adjusters, allowing you to select the tension you desire.
- Some simply snap on with little or no adjustment necessary.
- Some manufacturers make a tent that fits on/over the truck cover.
